Hilton Head Island Motorcoach Resort: December 27, 2015 - January 2, 2016

Dec 27:
We left our place at 4:00am to get to the storage facility by 5:00. We got there about 10 minutes early, which was good, in a way. Once we were able to get into the storage facility, we went to the Brave, and got started. We had several things to do before we got on the road - like change out the mattress for the bed, bring stuff in, get the fridge/freezer set up, etc. We also needed to get gas. By the time we got on the road, it was about 6:15am.

We knew we had a long drive ahead of us, but we weren't prepared for how long it was really going to be. By all accounts, we should've been pulling into HHI by 4pm, at the latest. Unfortunately, traffic was not on our side. Once we got into South Carolina, we basically sat in traffic for over 6 hours. It was awful. We ended up calling the resort & let them know we wouldn't be making it by 5pm to get escorted in. By the time we got there, it was about 7:30pm. We had been on the road since 4am, up since 3am. It was a VERY long day.

All 4 of us headed down 95.
Guess to figured out how to get on the dash?
Thankfully, our friends and their friends were already there and had cooked dinner. They also brought us some bottled water, as we didn't have any with us and there was only electric (and no water) connection outside the gates. When we initially hooked up, we noticed one of our panels was a little haywire, so that got added to our list of things for Winnebago to fix.

It was great to have a glass of wine (or a beer - depending on which of us it was) and get to chat with everyone. We decided to head back to our coach around 9:30 and get to bed.

Dec 28:
When we got up the next morning, I checked my phone, like usual (mostly email, Facebook, etc). I noticed that I had a couple of texts and a phone call from Jeffrey asking if we were still up around midnight. That was weird since he knew we were out of the count right after they dropped us off. Long story short, it turned out that their friend, Pete, fell & hit his head on one of his slides. He ended up in the hospital almost the rest of the week. Not the way they wanted to spend their vacation at all! (Side note: the slides are REALLY hard!) Jeffrey & Sam came back from the hospital right before we were being escorted in, so we told them we'd figure out when to pick up our rental car.

Look at these two hams!
Once we were able to, we checked into the resort and got escorted into our space. Jon got set up to work, I showered, and we were able to get a handle on the rest of our day. We ran out to get the rental & made a pit stop at the hospital. We had lunch at Mellow Mushroom and then headed back to the RV so that Jon could get back to work. I ran out to the grocery store to get some supplies for the week.

Wendy likes to protect her brother
Jon turned on the ice machine in the freezer at some point today. This will be important later.

Once Jon was done working, we had appetizers with Sam & Jeffrey at their RV and then dinner at ours. It was so nice to be able to have people over for dinner IN the RV! I made Grilled Hawaiian Chicken Skewers and a Gluten Free Creamy Ranch Pasta Salad (with a couple of modifications, including using gf pasta instead of normal pasta). We all agreed that both were pretty tasty!

Dec 29:
When we got up this morning, we found Wendy like this.

Poor Jon got the short end of the stick this week with still having to work. Though, with everything that 2015 gave us, I was using it as an excuse to get some down time as well.

After having the ice maker on for about 24 hours, we figured it should be making ice. Jon wanted to move the fridge in order to get to one of the lines behind it. I decided I was not on board with that (which led to a bit of a tiff). It turned out one of the lines (that was completely accessible by the outside panel) was kinked and smooshed a bit when they installed the fridge. It was leaking, so Jon cut out the part that was kinked and leaking and replaced it with a new piece of tubing. The ice maker works just fine now, without having to move the fridge.

During the afternoon, I went to the beach with Jeffrey while Jon was working & Sam was napping. We walked about 3.5 miles or so. It was nice to walk & chat. Once we were back, we both got cleaned up and the four of us had dinner at Bistro 17. We had a great experience here and really enjoyed the food. Jon and Jeffrey had the steak - which they both took home leftovers for steak & eggs the next day.

Dec 30:
While Jon was working, I ran over to Walmart to return one thing and buy a few others. One thing about being gluten free is that you really do need a toaster if you want to have gluten free bread. We never got one for the Lance, because I didn't really eat a lot of gluten free bread. I still try not to have a lot of it, but when you do want it, it needs to be toasted.

Once I was back, I had lunch with Jon and then got a text from Sam & Jeffrey asking if I wanted to come have drinks with them. I managed to find where they were and joined them at The Porch for a couple of afternoon drinks.

Once we were done at The Porch, we headed back to the resort. We all got cleaned up and eventually headed to dinner at Hudson's Seafood on the Bay with Jon, Jeffrey, and Sam. It was a fun place & we all enjoyed dinner.

Dec 31:
Jon didn't have too much work to do, so he was finally able to "play" a little. We had lunch at A Lowcountry Backyard Restaurant; it was an awesome little place. We enjoyed the food, and a good bit of the decor.

After lunch, we stopped to get macaroons at Marche de Macaroons for dessert later that night.

We finally got a chance to walk on the beach together. Yay!

A couple of hours later, we walked on the beach with Sam, Jeffrey, and the pups.

It was time for NYE dinner! We had appetizers at Sam & Jeffrey's place and dinner at ours. We had grilled maple pork tenderloin with pear salad (from Meals Made Simple, Against All Grain) for dinner. It's one of our absolute favorites from the book.

We made it all of the way to midnight, had our grapes and champagne, and got to bed around 12:30/1am. It was a late night for sure! Even the "kids" stayed up.

Jan 1:
We had a lazy day for most of the day. We had breakfast at Stacks. It's so hard for me to have breakfast out, so it was great to be able to eat out. We also had lunch out at The Smokehouse, which was just ok. We kept our activity level pretty light though.

Jeffrey took us to drop off the rental car. We all decided that we had big breakfasts/lunches, so a small dinner was in order. Jeffrey and Sam had us over for gluten free pasta, meatballs, and salad. They were even nice enough to give us the leftovers, since they weren't going to have the fridge on the way home.

Jan 2:
We drove to the Enfield/Rocky Mount KOA. You can read a little more about that here.

Jan 3:
We headed the rest of the way home from NC, got the Winnie back into storage, and headed home. We were a little sad to put it to bed for the winter!

Enfield/Rocky Mount KOA, North Carolina: January 2-3, 2016

We packed up & left Hilton Head Island Motorcoach Resort around 8:30am. Given how traffic was on the way down, we figured we should give ourselves extra time on the road, in case we needed it. We had also decided we were going to split the trip up into 2 days to avoid having to pull into our storage facility in the dark, again. We had several choices for stopping and ended up choosing the Enfield/Rocky Mount KOA.

We hit a few pockets of traffic, but nothing horrible, on the way up the road. I think the longest one had us about 20-30 minutes of sitting in traffic.

At some point during the day, the KOA staff emailed us asking a couple of questions & promptly responded after we did. Once there, check-in went smoothly.

Prior to our stay, it had rained several days, so the ground was a little soft & there was a good bit of mud on the ground.

We were in spot B7 & had a great sunset view.

This is basically same as the picture below, but you can see how muddy it was here.

After dinner (leftover gf pasta & meatballs with salad), we decided to watch Inside Out. We really enjoyed it. Around this time, we decided to turn on the furnace, only to discover that it lights and then goes back out. Guess we'll be putting that on our "needs to be fixed" list!

We curled up in bed with the furbabies and had a good night's sleep. Got up the next morning, had breakfast, and packed up. We also had to winterize the coach. Thankfully, our manual has a detailed procedure of how to winterize. Thank goodness for that! We got on the road and headed back up to the Northern VA area & tucked the Brave into it's space for the winter. We'll have to take her back out for state safety inspection and to get a couple of things fixed, but otherwise, she's staying put until March.

I'm not sure that we'd stay here for vacation purposes, but it was good for an over night stay.

Still Stocking!

In the past few months, we've been randomly finding things to get for the Brave. Some items are needed, some are pure fun things, you can guess which is which.

Le Creuset non-stick pans
Utensil organizers (hopefully these fit!)
Telescope (Celestron AstroMaster 70AZ, got from United mileage awards)
Wine Storage
Meat Thermometer

There are some things that are still on the wish list (in addition to the items from the last post).

Knife set
Salt & Pepper mill
Cutting boards
Cooking utensils
Locking gas cap
Portable laundry device (Looking into the Scrubba, Laundry Pod, and Drumi)
Outdoor table of some sort
Solar lights

Stocking the Brave

With a new coach & more storage room comes the ability to stock it a little more like "home". We decided to add a few things in the kitchen to make life more like it is at home. I'm proudest of the folding kitchen cart find. Solves the problem of smaller kitchen counter space. Hopefully I'll still appreciate it after using it for a while!
(Note: We are not affiliated with any of the parties we've purchased any of our gear from - it's just where we've bought the items or a link to where you can find them online.)

We have a few other things on our wish list, but they can wait for now. Current Wishlist:

Picking up the Brave

The original plan for picking up the 2016 Winnebago Brave that we ordered in September at the Hershey RV Show was to head up to Camping World Syracuse on Thursday with our travel trailer and drive home Sunday with Jon driving the Brave and me (Heather) driving our truck.

We got a call on Wednesday night that my grandma passed away, we'd know when the funeral was on Thursday sometime during the day. So, we changed our plans as we went. It was a long weekend of driving 2311 miles, emotional as all get out, and stressful as anything. But, we did everything we needed to and it all worked out in the end. By the time we got home Monday night, all we wanted to do was sleep!

Thursday, December 10

Finished packing truck
Dropped off David the Dog
Picked up the Lance

Headed up I-81N to Syracuse, NY
Pulled in & Mike was waiting for us. We chatted with him about our upcoming weekend.
Checked into Comfort Inn Fairgrounds, Syracuse, NY

Friday, December 11

We were able to move our appointment up from noon to 10:30am.
Went to Wegmans to get lunch.
Did our walk-through.
Recorded it - here's the link to watch on YouTube.
Met with Mike to go over the purchase & to sign the papers.
Did a drive (with someone from CW since we'd never drove a Class A before).
Had lunch in the Brave.

Started transferring everything from the Lance to the Brave.
Came up with a small list of things that needed to be fixed.
Back into Camping World to buy a few things that we had on our list.
Left for Cleveland, OH. Realized about 30 minutes outside of Syracuse that we forgot Jon's suit & dress shirt in the hotel room. Called hotel, they were less than helpful.
Arrived in Cleveland around 10:30pm.

Saturday, December 12

Got up early to get on the road to Cadillac, MI.
Stopped in Ann Arbor, MI at a JC Penny (thank goodness for holiday hours!) to pick up new dress clothes for Jon. Called Syracuse hotel back to hopefully get good news about the shirt & suit. They called saying they found the shirt, but not the suit that was right next to it. (I call shenanigans. I've been in contact with their GM and basically one of the employees is lying and no one's going to do anything about it.)
Made it to Cadillac, MI at 12:45. Checked into the hotel, got changed, and headed to the church for the funeral.
After the funeral, we headed to the burial site. Something interesting to note is that 99% of the cars pulled over to the side of the road to let the processional pass - even on the other side of the road. Being in the Northern VA area, that just doesn't happen near us.
My mom, sister, and brother got back on the road to get a head start on the next day's worth of driving.
After going back to the church, we went back to the hotel to change and then went to grandma's house to spend some time with my aunts and uncle.
I picked out a couple of items I wanted to bring home with me to remind me of grandma. Around 9pm, we went back to the hotel to crash for the night.

Sunday, December 13
We left Cadillac, MI super early (I want to say no later than 7am), knowing it was at least a 10 hour drive back to Syracuse. Nothing of note to really talk about other than it was a LONG day of driving. When we got back to Syracuse, we stopped into the Comfort Inn to collect the shirt they found and got more information about the general manager to be in touch with her. We then picked up the keys for the Brave and then headed to Wegmans to pick up dinner and got gas in the truck so we wouldn't have to do it in the morning. Thank goodness for the Camping World staff. The Brave was exactly where they said it'd be, hooked up to electric already, and all was well. We collapsed in bed and called it a night.

Monday, December 14
Another early-ish morning.
Got everything unhooked & put away.
We pulled out of Syracuse & got on the road back to NoVA.
Stopped in Frackville, PA for lunch (at Cracker Barrel, yum!)
Got stuck in early Baltimore rush hour traffic and HEAVY DC rush hour traffic.
Pulled into our storage facility & parked (in the dark).
Stopped at the grocery store on our way home.
Picked up David the Dog from the sitter's.
Collapsed.

10th Anniversary River Cruise: October 24 - November 5: Part 3, Basel, Switzerland and Rhine Cruise on AMACello

(Note: If I get time, I need to actually write about each day & fill in the outlines. I also need to add pictures)

Oct 29, 2015
This morning, our bags had to be outside of the room by 9am, so we needed to be up, showered, and packed earlier than a couple of days ago.

Got on the bus & traveled to Basel
Along the way, we stopped at the awesome rest stop in P… puts US rest stops to shame
Walking tour of Basel – went to Baselmunster & the walkway next to it. Autumn fair was going on. View from Main Basel across Rhine to Lesser Basel. Went to the Town Hall to point out the meeting spot.
We had about an hour/hour and a half on our own.
Walked through Farmer’s Market
Went to Coop & got lunch. Went back to Town Hall to sit on the stairs & eat.
Walked around several of the hilly streets & back to Town Hall to meet everyone.
Walked back to the bus meeting place with the tour guide & waited for the bus.
Bus ride to the boat
Got on boat, luggage was already in the room. Surrendered passports for the night.
At 6pm, we had our welcome & safety meeting. Around 7:15, the meeting concluded & we went to dinner at The Chef’s Table.
Chef’s Table meal was very good! They take allergies seriously & if there was anything I couldn’t have, they let me know. They also made slight modifications to a couple of the items so that I could have them.
We went straight to bed after dinner, due to it being a long day.

Oct 30, 2015
We woke up "late" (for this trip any how), got ready, sorted laundry to be done, and headed to breakfast. We noticed there were paramedics in our hallway and that we had been stopped for a while. With everything labeled with allergens, it's easy to see what you can/can't eat. Everywhere should be like this, seriously.

The maître d' met me in the dining room with the lunch and dinner menu so that I could make my selections for both meals. It sounds like this will be the norm for the week. I love it! It has really settled my mind about being able to eat safely on the cruise. He asked me to let them know when I’d be doing the light lunches instead of the full lunch.

While we were at breakfast, we were in a lock. Just as we were finishing up breakfast and talking with some of the other cruisers, we started to go down the lock. That was quite the disorienting experience. The first of 14!

Veronika came on the speaker & said that her 9:30 talk about the rest of the ports was going to be postponed due to an emergency situation & that it’d be rescheduled later. We think she ended up going to the hospital with the passenger that was having problems.

After breakfast, we picked up our passports, safety cards, and tour color cards. We then headed to the lounge to relax a bit. Most of the other passengers did the same. (Rooms get cleaned around this time of day, so it’s best to be out of them to allow the housekeepers the ability to work uninterrupted).

Once we arrived in Breisach, we waited in the lounge until our tour was called. We then boarded the bus by color and enjoyed our ride over to Freiburg. When we got to Freiburg, we took a walking tour around the old town, mostly focused on the cathedral. A lot of the town was destroyed in WWII.  We had about an hour of free time. We were able to go into the church, and walk around it for a bit. We also chatted with several of the other passengers and waited for our guide.

When we got back to the bus, we drove through a town that’s known for their wine producing. We kind of wish we would’ve been able to stop & sample the wines! Once back to the boat, we decided to walk with our tour guide (Monika) up to the church in Breisach. The sun was getting ready to set, so we didn’t have a lot of time. Also, the talk about the ports was now at 6:30, so we needed to be back for that. I wish we had done the walking tour here first and then gone to Freiburg. It would’ve been ok with me to drive back in the dark!

At 6:30, we had the port talk and then dinner immediately following. After dinner, there was a French singer & accordion player. They were pretty good. We enjoyed the performance for a bit and headed to bed around 10pm.

Oct 31, 2015
Happy Halloween!

Today, we travelled to Strasbourg, France. There was traffic on the Rhine, so we ended up getting in about an hour late, which was a bit disappointing.

Our tour guide for Strasbourg was fantastic. I wish we had been able to take our full tour. We were able to see “Little France” and the “masterpiece” (aka: The Cathedral Notre Dame of Strasbourg). The church bells after the clock struck noon were amazing.

Inside the cathedral was the astronomical clock. We were able to watch the clock performance at 12:30pm. It lasted about 3 minutes and was interesting to see.

After the clock performance, we met our tour guide and walked through a bit more of historic Strasbourg to the bus. We came back to the boat for lunch (easier for me to have a GF meal) and then decided to stay on the boat and relax for the afternoon.

We wrote a couple of postcards, enjoyed the sundeck, and generally just relaxed. We also got to see the crew decorating for Halloween. It’s kind of funny because the Europeans don’t really celebrate Halloween, so they were all trying to figure out what the holiday is for.

We had dinner with a few of our pre-cruise extension guests. There was a funny incident where one of the ladies was celebrating her birthday, but they brought her a “happy anniversary” cake, so they also brought her a “happy birthday” cake!

After dinner, I went up to the Halloween party for a bit. The staff was handing out masks, hats, and other head pieces. The music & people watching were a good bit of fun. Jon stayed in the room to get some rest.

Nov 1, 2015
This morning, we left Strasbourg for Speyer. Spending the morning sailing was kind of nice. It was a pretty foggy morning, so there wasn’t a ton to see. The traffic on the Rhine wasn’t too bad today and we got into Speyer just about on time.

We decided to head to Heidelburg to do the walking tour and go up to the castle. We had a bit of an interesting situation on our bus. There is a group of Portuguese speaking people on our ship & they ended up on our bus. The tour guide didn’t let us know they’d all be sitting in the back with their tour guide (who would be talking with them the entire trip), so a bunch of us were sitting towards the back of the bus & we all had to shuffle. No big deal, but this was the first of a few “herding” mistakes our tour guide made.

It was about an hour drive to Heidelburg from Speyer.

Castle ruins, churches, pedestrian bridge with the monkey, beer & coffee
Bus ride back – funny story about the priest & bus driver getting to heaven

Nov 2, 2015
Rudesheim (gondola ride – lots of fog)
Christmas store
Walking wine tour
German lunch onboard with ice cream social after
Cruising the Rhine looking for castles in the fog, fog finally lifted & we were able to see all of the castles. Rudesheim Coffee on the Rhine River as we passed the Lorelei Rock.
Most of the group did a walking tour around Koblenz - we skipped it

Nov 3, 2015
Relaxed morning – watching the towns/cities of the Rhine as we sailed towards Cologne
Arrived in Cologne, walking tour
St Peter’s Cathedral
Walked around (found 2 fabric stores)
Came back to the boat & went to the guest lecturer about modern Germany
Enjoyed a farewell cocktail reception & dinner

Nov 4, 2015
Woke up “late”, had breakfast
Took care of gratuities & guest surveys
Sat in lounge for a while
Amsterdam canal tour followed by bus tour
Free time in Amsterdam (cheese shop & hidden church)
Back on boat to pack, classical music concert, and dinner
We got an anniversary cake at the end of dinner
Lounge to socialize with everyone (and share our cake), one last time

Nov 5, 2015
Woke up, finished packing, got breakfast, waited in lounge
Claimed bags & waited for transfer
Got to airport, checked in, went through security
Met some of Amsterdam’s finest – forgot to take jams out of my carryon for scanning
Once that was sorted out, we went through passport control, & found our gate
Had an uneventful trip home. We got in just over an hour early, which was great!
Easy trip through Global Entry
Luggage came pretty quickly
Through the 2nd level of customs officers (declared the cheese & jam as the food I was bringing back, she didn’t make me get them scanned again)
Back to the car – it’s 75 degrees – WHAT?!
Went home, dropped everything off, went to pick up the CSA, hit up the grocery store for a couple of things, then went to get David (the dog). It was so good to see him.
Back to home to get settled in & start laundry.

Back to reality!
